Goodwill Treasures!

A few months ago I was looking at a family picture we had just taken at our house for Christmas. It was a great picture, don't get me wrong, but the only thing I could focus on was how bare our walls looked. I'm sure I'm overreacting but it was just so...how do I put this... loud to me. In my mind I was thinking I might as well have painted the wall a neon orange for how badly the wall was screaming, "Put something up for crying out loud!!"

Micah and I haven't really ever put any money towards "Home Decor." Ever. Except for maybe a plant or two that I may or may not have killed... hehe. Pretty much everything we have was either given to us or we already had from before we were married. I've been looking for some wall pieces to hang up (shelves, sconces, etc.) but I've also found a few other items to make our house look so cute.

While I was in Georgia my sister and I went on a few trips to the local Goodwill and I was amazed at how much good stuff there was. I'm just so used to the local DI having (how do I put this nicely...) not so good stuff. And by that I mean that it has gone thru 3 generations and been pretty beat up before it finally makes its way to DI. I'm pretty sure that's just Mormon culture in general- we're frugal peeps ya know! ;) So anyway, I was totally excited when I found some cute clothes for me and Kenzie but I was really excited for these two finds: a rod iron 3 candle holder and a 16x20 picture frame.

The candle holder was silver-ish and it wasn't my favorite, but for $3 and the style matching exactly with a rod iron tile holder we had at home, I knew a little spraypaint could make it perfect. So that's what I did. :)

The pineapple candlestick was a gift so I didn't have to pay for that, but since it had a few chips in it and the pineapple wasn't exactly my style, I painted it too.

I bought a 16x20 frame for one of my bridals to be on display at our reception but once we got married we put a wedding picture in that frame. And because we couldn't afford another frame that big (cause holy cow they get up there in price!) my bridal has been hiding under our bed ever since. I was so excited to find this frame at Goodwill for only $4!! It had a warped and faded poster in it, so I just threw it out.

And of course it had to be black to match all my other frames-

A while back I broke the glass in an 8x10 frame I had. Like I said, we haven't ever bought any of these kind of things so losing one like that made me pretty sad cause I only have so many frames. While I was decluttering my house this week I stumbled on a calendar that I'd kept from 2008 with paintings of LDS temples from around the world and remembered why I'd kept it. To hang up in picture frames!

So I cut out the picture and stuck it to a piece of cardboard and wa-la! An instant work of art. I know it'll look better with glass, but I'm not sure how much a sheet of glass is or where I would even get one. So for now, this is what it is :)

So all in all these 4 different projects only cost me $10!! $3 for the rod iron, $4 for the frame and $3 for the spraypaint (Black Satin by Krylon). The other things I already had at home. I love saving money and making my home look great, don't you?

You are my hero! Please post more of your frugal ways because I love ideas! As for picture frames, I use coupons at Michaels for the bigger ones. Definitely more than $4, but great frames if you are looking for something special. We have our family picture in a 16x20 I think, and it is a VERY nice frame for $25. (We printed the picture at Sam's, very cheap! hooray!)

Wa-sham! Awesome!! I also had GREAT luck at Savers when I lived in provo...way beat DI. And if you can make it to the American Fork DI, they are lots better too. Something about college kids makes the Provo DI awful! I loved it!
